High Performance and Sports

In high-pressure sectors - whether in professional sports, corporate leadership, or the performing arts - the qualities that drive success can often become the very things that lead to burnout, isolation, or a loss of identity. High performance is not just about physical or technical skill; it is about the psychological capacity to remain grounded when the stakes are at their highest. My practice provides a confidential, specialist space for high achievers to navigate the unique mental demands of their environments.

Challenges in the Pursuit of Excellence

Working at the elite level brings a specific set of psychological pressures that general therapy often overlooks. I work with individuals to address:

  • The Weight of Expectation: Managing the internal and external pressures to constantly deliver results.

  • Imposter Syndrome & Perfectionism: Deconstructing the "inner critic" that suggests your success is a fluke or that anything less than perfection is failure.

  • Identity Beyond Performance: Navigating the "existential cliff" when your self-worth becomes entirely fused with your professional or athletic output.

  • Burnout & Chronic Stress: Understanding the physiological "fight or flight" responses that occur when the body and mind are pushed to their limits without adequate recovery.

  • Injury & Transition: Processing the psychological impact of forced time away from your field or the daunting shift into "what comes next" after a career ends.

  • RED-S & Energy Availability: Specialist support for athletes navigating Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, addressing the psychological drivers of under-fuelling and the impact of low energy availability on performance, hormonal health, and mood.

My Approach to High Performance

High-performance environments - whether on the pitch, in the boardroom, or on the stage - operate under a similar paradox: they demand excellence while often providing no room for the vulnerability required to sustain it. When you are expected to be "always on" and in control, the pressure can become isolating. Without a safe outlet for the weight of these expectations, it is easy to reach a breaking point where things begin to unravel.

In these spaces, common survival strategies can inadvertently become self-sabotaging. You might find yourself "freezing" before a key event, or struggling to compartmentalize life stressors that bleed into your professional or sporting world. When performance is the only metric of success, maladaptive coping mechanisms - such as avoidance, irritability with peers, or substance use - often emerge as a way to regain a sense of control. Most high achievers are taught how to perform, but very few are taught how to manage the psychological cost of that performance.

High performance is unique in how deeply it invades your inner story. Few other careers or pursuits are so "black and white" in their judgment of success. When your status is tied to your latest win or promotion, a change in circumstances—such as an injury, a transition between teams, or a shift in leadership—can trigger an existential crisis. You may begin to question not just your ability, but who you are as a person.

I provide a confidential space to unravel the "performer" and understand the human behind it. Our work is two-fold:

  • Performance Strategy: Implementing practical psychological tools to improve your focus, training, and output in high-pressure moments.

  • Personal Integration: Understanding your unique journey and building a resilient sense of self that remains stable, regardless of the results on the day.

By reclaiming your identity from your performance, you can move away from short-term survival and toward sustainable, long-term success.
